How to Report

Who is required to report?

All persons are required to report.

When is a report required?

Any person who has reasonable cause to believe that a child has been subjected to abuse or neglect, including sexual abuse, shall report the same to the Division of Child Protection and Permanency by telephone or otherwise.

What information should the report include?

Reports should contain, where possible:

  • The names and addresses of the child and his/her parent, guardian, or other person having custody and control of the child

If known:

  • The child’s age
  • Name of the alleged perpetrator and that person’s relationship to the child
  • The nature and possible extent of the child’s injuries, abuse, or maltreatment, including any evidence of previous injuries, abuse, or maltreatment
  • Any other information that may be helpful with respect to the child abuse and the identity of the perpetrator, including:
    • How urgent the need is for intervention
    • Whether there is a likelihood of imminent danger for the child

Failure to report

Citation: Ann. Stat. § 9:6-8.14

Any person knowingly violating the reporting laws, including the failure to report an act of child abuse while having reasonable cause to believe that an act of child abuse has been committed, is a disorderly person.
